Segregation

Hurley is the name of the village where I was raised by maternal grandparents through the 1940’s. At five years of age, I had to attend the “baby grade” primarily to prepare to learn Basic English and to continue on academically. The village was segregated more by choice because of the language barrier. However; all of the commercial businesses were across the tracks in the Anglo side of the village. The Junior High, the High School and the Catholic Church and the swimming pool and the theatre were across the tracks. All the businesses accepted the Spanish speakers, I guess it just made good economic sense to accept the general population. The only municipal building that existed in the Spanish side was the jail and as youngsters; the deputies would invite us to see the jail cells.
